May 8, 2018 by Lisa Carson

Our senior care agency operates in the San Angelo area of Texas. Among the many home care services that we offer is the health monitoring of elderly clients. Our care providers are well-trained to recognize the symptoms of all kinds of different health conditions.

As May is the Stroke Awareness Month in the United States, we need to talk about the signs and symptoms of stroke. As you might have imagined, Comfort Keepers have the knowledge and the experience to recognize all the indicators that the senior is experiencing a stroke.

Speaking of stroke symptoms, here are some of the most common:

  • Numbness – A symptom that almost always occurs when a stroke is happening is the numbness in the limbs on one side of the body. The senior may experience the needles-and-pins sensations or a complete paralysis in their hands, legs, or even face.
  • Severe headache – Another common sign of stroke is a severe headache. If the senior is complaining about this symptom, the providers of the home care services need to call 911 ASAP.
  • Impaired speech – The caregivers need to ask the senior to try to repeat some simple sentences. If they can’t do it, it might be that a stroke is happening.
  • Impaired vision – If the senior is complaining about blurred vision or complete blindness in one or both eyes, the caregivers ought to get some help.
  • Problems with balance – The home care services providers need to encourage the senior client to try to stand on their feet on their own. If they can’t keep the balance, it’s a sign that the care providers need to call the doctors.

These are just some of the most frequent signs of stroke, but the list of symptoms is much, much longer. In order to be able to spot it, caregivers need to have proper training, as well as plenty of experience.

This is the reason why Comfort Keepers are among the most popular senior care agencies, not only in San Angelo but in the whole of Texas. To learn more about the services we provide, contact us today or call (325) 267-8532.
